About this Presentation:

The nursery rhyme is a staple of preschool play, but hidden within many of the verses is a deeper occult history. For example, “Ladybug, ladybug, fly away home; Your house is on fire and your children are gone” is found in many rhyme collections, but also appears in folklore collections from North Carolina and the Appalachian Mountains as part of a love divination ritual. Similar rhymes frequently derive from extant verbal charms or spells that have been transformed over time into playroom poetry. This session will explore a number of nursery rhymes with occult origins as well as how some are still in use in magical practices today.
