The Fair Folk. The Good Neighbors. The Shining Ones. All names for the enigmatic, powerful, and terrifying beings known as the fairies. Pop culture, theatre, and hearsay have brought about centuries of baggage and mixed interpretations that are often unrecognizable from the entities of Celtic origin. Who then, truly, are these mysterious beings whom were looked upon in awe, who were whispered about in euphemisms for fear of incurring their wrath? This presentation will take a look at the fairies of the Celtic countries - namely Ireland and Scotland. We will examine their origin stories as well as behavioral patterns in the folklore; what powers they are believed to possess and utilize(for good or for ill); what centuries of folklore has revealed to us when it comes to etiquette and preparation for interaction…
