Growing up in the Southwestern US, stories of La Llorona, the Weeping Woman who steals children away if they stray too close to waterways, circulated among schoolyards and classrooms. The true, historical figure she is based on is much less widely known and talked of: La Malinche, the traitor, an indigenous woman sorely maligned and greatly misunderstood for using the power she had in the ways that she could. This class aims at an exploration of the history and folk lore of La Malinche so that students may come to a better understanding of her, an exploration of her role as La Llorona, as well as methods and workings to key into her power in order to undermine…
