About the event
This event will take place online via Zoom. This class is approx. 120 min.
About this Presentation:
The saintly martyrs of the Christian tradition have long been venerated in their capacity to resist oppressive hegemonies and protect the most vulnerable. This class will explore a selection of saints venerated within the Eastern Orthodox Church that have been traditionally called upon for works of protection (especially that of women and minority groups), overthrow of oppressors, and resistance against individuals and institutions alike that threaten the freedom and wellbeing of the poorest. Drawing on ethnographic, anthropological, and ethnological research, as well as personal experience and training, this lecture will consider some familiar faces as well as saints specific to the Orthodox Church—alongside revolutionary folk saints from the Balkans—as agents of change and allies for justice within the Balkan folk magical context.
