In 21st Century Occulture we have watched “folk” become synonymous with “ancient” and “ancestral”, and so we have witnessed a revival of priority to what-was, as opposed to what-is-becoming. Far from puerile and reckless fantasies, the Cosmic Horror and Science Fiction Cinema of the 20th and 21st Century outstretch their tentacles toward a new definition of folk witch – a Monstrous Other unafraid of existing in their Space Age civilization, and liberated from the popular neo-phobia. What can Blade Runner teach us about being more human than human – so human we become inhuman? What can Videodrome and Crimes of the Future communicate about the way the witch body adapts to environmental and social crises and scarcity? What does Event Horizon elucidate about animism and possession with machinic intelligences? What can Hellraiser show us about initiatory ordeal and being remade in the image of our spirits? What can the Alien Saga communicate about the witch’s survival, and necessary hybridization? How can The Thing soothe the ever-mutating and restless heart of the witch in a world where identities are cannibalized and commodified for profit? Join Sasha Ravitch in this exploration of how Cosmic Horror and Science Fiction cinema are creating a 21st century folk witchcraft rooted in the world as it is now, and as it will become – not as it was in the past.

About the Presenter:

Sasha Ravitch (she/her) spends her days as a consultant-practitioner and professional writer. She regularly appears for podcasts and conferences, having twice been a keynote speaker for AstroMagia, as well as a regular lecturer for the Salem Witchcraft & Folklore Festival, and recently in Birmingham at the Magickal Women’s Conference on experimental Shakespearean Witchcraft. She has been published by Hadean Press and soon Revelore Press for a forthcoming book on Constellation Hydra, co-authored with her dear friend and colleague, Maeg Keane. Ravitch spends her free time spinning starlight and constellating desire from the floor of the ocean or a sunny rock in the river, and reading and writing weird worlds and even stranger spirits into existence.
