Trickster. Fire demon. Psychopomp. Hypostasis of Odin. Loki transcends simple categorization despite attempts by medieval Christians and even some modern scholars to equate him with Lucifer. Even many modern Heathens have shunned him or forbidden his worship even as he stands in contradiction and resistance to notions of white supremacy and transphobia that have permeated many heathen communities. Old Norse literature describes how Loki fathered (and mothered) the forces that would ultimately destroy the gods and the world during the Wolf Age, only to give rise to a new era. This lecture will provide an overview of the extant mythic and folkloric traditions regarding Loki drawing on literary and archaeological sources before exploring how he may be incorporated…
