This course will be a step-by-step guide to one process for acquire a necromantic assistant. What I mean by a necromantic assistant is a spirit of a dead person who one has created a relationship with and uses for various occult practices, especially as something of an emissary to other spiritual entities. We find records of rituals to achieve this in Scot’s The Discoverie of Witchcraft and a concrete example of one way to achieve this assistant and the many uses to which to put it in the real practice of the seventeenth-century English cunning woman Mary Parish as documented in The Magical Adventures of Mary Parish. The many potential uses for this spirit include asking it to bring other spirits to you, most traditionally fey spirits; helping you to contact other spirits of the dead; and sending it out to gather information you might not otherwise have access to (for example, spying on people for you) or the discovery of secrets more generally.
This step-by-step guide will include: historical approaches and perspectives on methods and uses; how to make friends with a cemetery (the teacher’s guide to cemetery and graveyard magical protocol and the larger practice of developing a friendly and supportive relationship with a given burial ground); oracular cemetery rambling and finding a willing contact; methods of communication with the potential ally; ritual practice for pacting with the spirit to make official and robust the partnership; potential uses of the assistant; and finally the care and maintenance of your bond with your necromantic assistant.
