Throughout American history, the decisions of the judiciary have fueled devastating economic inequality, stripped those arbitrarily disfavored of the ability to participate in their own governance, blessed all forms of state-sanctioned violence and discrimination, and erected countless barriers to the causes of racial, sexual, and reproductive justice. Magic, as the ultimate tool of the downtrodden and oppressed, has and continues to evolve in kind, facing each of these injustices head-on; meeting and overcoming the social and political challenges those who call upon it.
This presentation will be rooted in an interwoven analysis of contemporary political strategies utilized by explicitly fascistic and otherwise authoritarian political movements within the US to infuse the state and federal judiciaries alike with conservative activist judges on a grassroots level, leading to the aforementioned injustices, and the explicitly magical…
