Incense has played a pivotal role in spiritual practices, ceremony, and spellcraft. In this engaging, hands-on workshop, we will embark on a sensory journey to explore the captivating aromas, rich history, and practical techniques associated with this sacred art.
 
We will begin by experiencing a variety of incense firsthand, learning to identify and appreciate the unique scents and energetic qualities of different resins, herbs, and spices. From earthy resins to rare woods, we will discover how these fragrances enhance ritual, promote healing, and create sacred space. We will explore some historical incense recipes, such as ancient Egypt's famous "Kyphi" incense, and a few historical incense blends from the grimoire traditions. By examining these time-honored formulas, we will gain insight into the art and science of incense crafting and draw inspiration for our creations.
 
Participants will learn the techniques for crafting both incense cones and loose incense blends, using a variety of natural ingredients. We will discuss the importance of selecting appropriate herbs, resins, and woods based on their magical correspondences and aromatic properties. Each participant will create personalized incense blends to take home.

About the Presenter:
Dr. Jeremy Bechelli (he/him)is an accomplished scholar and occult practitioner who seamlessly bridges the realms of science and magic. With a Ph.D. in pathology from the University of Texas Medical Branch and an M.S. in microbiology from the University of Rochester, Dr. Bechelli currently studies tick-borne infectious diseases and endothelial pathobiology. Alongside his scientific pursuits, he is a dedicated student of European folk magic, particularly interested in the traditional witch-lore and practices of the British Isles. He works extensively within the Green Arte and studies occult herbalism, folk medicine, ethnobotany, and phytochemistry. As the owner of Phytognosis, a business specializing in plant-based spirituality, incense, resins, and botanical curios, Dr. Bechelli brings a unique perspective grounded in rigorous scientific inquiry and deep respect for ancient traditions. Through his work, he aims to illuminate the profound wisdom inherent in the natural world and foster a greater understanding of the sacred plants that have shaped human spirituality for generations.
